I am writing as a concerned Colorado resident alarmed by the increasingly aggressive redistricting tactics in states like Texas, Florida, and other Republican-controlled legislatures. These states are manipulating district boundaries to cement partisan power for decades—undermining fair representation and weakening democracy.
This November, California Governor Gavin Newsom will have a vote on a bold redistricting plan to secure fair maps and protect progressive values. Other states are preparing to follow suit. Colorado cannot afford to wait. If we fail to act now, we risk becoming vulnerable to the same anti-democratic tactics already reshaping political power across the country.
Our state’s values—protecting voting rights, reproductive freedom, climate action, and defending marginalized communities—are only as secure as the maps that determine who holds power. Waiting until the next redistricting cycle may be too late. Federal power can shift quickly, and those hostile to our priorities will not hesitate to redraw Colorado in their image.
Colorado should act immediately to:
• Use every legal and procedural tool available to ensure our maps reflect the will of Colorado voters, not extremist agendas.
• Prioritize maps that protect progressive majorities in both state and federal representation.
• Create legal safeguards now to block future interference from bad actors.
California’s upcoming vote proves bold, preemptive action is possible right now—not years from now. The longer we delay, the greater the risk that others will determine Colorado’s political future.
We must lead by example, showing that we will defend democracy with the same urgency and determination as those working to undermine it. I urge you to begin pursuing every available path—legislative, procedural, and legal—to secure fair maps that preserve Colorado’s values and protect our future.
Thank you for your leadership and for acting swiftly to protect our state.
