Veto SB1058
To: Gov. Hobbs
From: A verified voter in Tucson, AZ
April 13
Veto SB1058. This bill would ban financial institutions from using merchant category codes that identify gun retailers and firearms purchases, undermining both public safety and the free market.
These codes are an important tool for flagging suspicious gun purchases that help curb gun violence. Banning them removes a layer of oversight that can identify patterns of dangerous behavior before tragedy strikes. Senator Rogers and the NRA claim these codes could lead to a gun registry, but that's a distraction from the real issue: preventing mass shootings and illegal trafficking.
The bill also creates a practical problem for businesses. Peer-to-peer payment services like Zelle, Google Pay, and PayPal prohibit firearms and ammunition transactions in their terms of service. Without merchant category codes, these platforms cannot identify and block prohibited purchases. SB1058 would make it impossible for private companies to enforce their own policies, which is the opposite of the free market principles Rogers claims to support.
This legislation protects gun lobby interests at the expense of public safety and business autonomy. Veto SB1058.
