Urgent Need to Combat Executive Corruption and Preserve Our Democracy

To: Sen. Lee, Sen. Curtis, Rep. Moore

From: A constituent in Clearfield, UT

May 19

I am writing to you today as a deeply concerned constituent. Recent and escalating reports regarding the ethical and financial actions of the current administration highlight an alarming level of corruption that threatens the foundational principles of our republic. From the apparent establishment of taxpayer-financed slush funds to reward political loyalists, to the transactional use of the presidential pardon power, and the compromising of national security interests for corporate gain, these actions represent a severe and brazen abuse of the public trust. The framers of our Constitution anticipated such dangers and repeatedly warned against the corrosive effects of corruption in the executive branch. They understood that a republic could only survive if its leaders served the public good rather than their own private or factional interests. During the Constitutional Convention, George Mason explicitly warned that "if we do not provide against corruption, our government will soon be at an end." Similarly, Alexander Hamilton noted in Federalist No. 68 that "Nothing was more to be desired than that every practicable obstacle should be opposed to cabal, intrigue, and corruption," particularly concerning the highest office in the land. George Washington, in his Farewell Address, also cautioned us against the "insidious wiles" of unchecked influence and the danger of public servants using their power for self-enrichment. The current environment—where government actions, regulatory exemptions, and even the scales of justice appear available to the highest bidder or the most loyal ally—is exactly the nightmare scenario the founders feared. A government that normalizes transactional corruption ceases to be a representative democracy. Therefore, I am asking you, as my elected representative, to publicly commit to the following actions to stop this corruption and prevent it from ever happening again: 1 Vigorous Oversight: Support and lead rigorous congressional investigations into the current administration's deployment of taxpayer funds, the alleged monetization of the pardon process, and foreign policy or regulatory decisions that blatantly favor political donors and corporate allies. 2 Legislative Reform: Draft, co-sponsor, and vote for robust anti-corruption legislation. Congress must close executive ethics loopholes, establish strict oversight over the granting of clemency, and prevent the creation of unaccountable, politically motivated settlement funds. 3 Institutional Defense: Publicly condemn transactional politics and pledge to put the preservation of our democratic institutions and the rule of law above any partisan loyalty. Our democracy is not self-sustaining; it requires the active, courageous defense of those we entrust with its care. History will judge how our leaders respond to this moment. I expect my representatives to stand on the side of the Constitution and the American people. I look forward to your response detailing the specific, actionable steps you will take to halt the current tide of corruption and safeguard our republic for future generations.
