Governor Polis' decision to commute Tina Peters' sentence is a direct assault on the integrity of Colorado's justice system, and I expect you to speak out against it publicly and immediately. Peters was convicted on multiple felony counts related to her deliberate tampering with election equipment in Mesa County. A jury of her peers heard the evidence and delivered a verdict. That verdict deserves respect, not a political override from the Governor's office.
Commuting this sentence sends a dangerous message: that election officials can undermine the democratic process and face no real consequences. Colorado voters and election workers who do their jobs honestly are watching how their elected officials respond. Condemn this commutation, and push for accountability measures that prevent the Governor's clemency power from being used to shield those convicted of election crimes.
When history looks back at Jared Polis' time in office, this decision will define it. Protecting a convicted election saboteur is not a footnote — it is a betrayal of every Coloradan who believes that democracy depends on accountability. That is the legacy he is choosing, and it should not go unanswered.
