Vote No on WIC Benefit Cuts — Protect Mothers and Children

To: Rep. Maloy, Sen. Lee, Sen. Curtis

From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT

June 5

Vote against the bill that just passed 213–210 slashing food benefits for nursing mothers and young children. This is not a budget fix — it's a choice to take fruit and vegetables away from the most vulnerable people in your district. The National WIC Association estimates nursing mothers' produce benefits would collapse from $52 to $13 a month, and young children's from $26 to $10. That's not a trim. That's gutting a lifeline. Rep. Andy Harris claims WIC is "fully funded" with $8 billion available, but that money doesn't change what this bill does to benefit levels. Cutting nutritional support for infants, toddlers, and new mothers to score a budget point is indefensible. The Senate has not yet passed this measure. Kill it there, or make clear you will fight to restore these benefits in any final package.
