I am writing from Teaneck, New Jersey to express my strong concern about a New Jersey State Police security grant check conducted at my synagogue during Rosh Hashanah services. Rosh Hashanah is one of the holiest days of the Jewish calendar, observed with prayer, reflection, and community gathering. For law enforcement to schedule and conduct a grant inspection on such a sacred day was both disruptive and insensitive. While I value the State Police’s role in safeguarding houses of worship, this action displayed a troubling lack of awareness of religious observances. Security checks are important, but they must be done in a way that respects the dignity of worshippers. Scheduling them during a major holiday undermines the purpose of building trust between law enforcement and the faith community. It also leaves the impression that Jewish traditions are not being given the same consideration that would naturally be extended to other communities observing their most sacred days. Teaneck is home to one of the largest Jewish communities in New Jersey, and our synagogues rely on state and federal security grant programs for safety in an increasingly difficult climate. We appreciate that support deeply. But in order for those programs to succeed, they must be administered with sensitivity to the rhythms of Jewish life. I respectfully urge your office to ensure that the State Police and all agencies involved in administering security grants adopt clear guidelines to avoid scheduling inspections on major religious holidays. Doing so will not diminish the security program in any way. On the contrary, it will strengthen the partnership between government and faith communities by demonstrating genuine respect for the traditions of those being served. I ask that this matter be reviewed promptly and that appropriate steps be taken so that no synagogue or house of worship has to face a similar situation in the future.
