Stop the federal takeover of DC
To: Rep. Miller-Meeks, Sen. Ernst, Sen. Grassley
From: A constituent in Iowa City, IA
August 15
The federal take over of DC has to stop. Section 740 of the home rule act specifies that In no case, however, shall such services made available pursuant to any such direction under this subsection extend for a period in excess of forty-eight hours unless the President has, prior to the expiration of such period, notified the Chairmen and ranking minority members of the Committees on the District of Columbia of the Senate and the House of Representatives, in writing, as to the reason for such direction and the period of time during which the need for such services is likely to continue. At this time the president must have provided you with a reason for the emergency that requires this action. There is none. When protests were going on in the city for black lives matter, that was not an emergency according to this president. When hundreds of people attacked the capitol on January 6th and came looking for you, that was not an emergency according to this president. But crime rates lower than they've been in decades... That is an emergency according to this president. Homeless people are, to him, an emergency. Not one that requires finding housing, not one that requires creating jobs, but one that requires federal agents and national guardsmen to detain and arrest them. You have the ability to end this before the 30 days allowed by the home rule act. You can end this farce now. The home rule act says the section can terminate by the enactment into law of a joint resolution by the Congress providing for such termination The president has once shown he is willing to behave like the totalitarian models he looks up to. North Korea and Russia are his models of strong leaders. His actions in California with the national guard and the military, his actions in DC, and his threats of doing the same in other cities should scare you. I guarantee that it scares many of your constituents. He has already proven his disdain for due process. He has literally tried to sue judges for doing their job. Are you just going to let him do whatever he wants so he doesn't arrest you? Or maybe he'll just call another mob to DC and let them go after you again. I'm certain he will turn his back on that emergency just like he did last time. Do what is right. For DC, the country, and our democracy.
