Stop this ridiculous insistence on tariffs

To: Sen. Ernst, Rep. Miller-Meeks, Sen. Grassley

From: A constituent in Iowa City, IA

April 3

I am going to admit that I'm getting tired of writing letters to you. Probably not as tired as you are to receive the from me. Yet, it seems like every day this administration is doing something that requires me to reach out to you. Today the president added tariffs to every US ally and a long list of other countries and territories, including, it is said, a set of islands only inhabited by US military forces. But not Russia for some inexplicable reason. He did this even with no clear declared emergency, so the international emergency economic powers act doesn't apply. He applies them to countries that pose no national security risk so the trade expansion act doesn't apply. And it seems he used made up numbers to claim unfair trade practices under which the trade act of 1974 might be applied. Indonesia for example doesn't charge 64% tariffs or anywhere near that. None of these really apply. So that leaves the fact that you, in Congress, are the authorized branch of government under article I section 8 that can levy tariffs. You need to stop Trump from acting like a king ruling by fiat. This is a democracy and he can't use executive orders to run the country. He can't have a press conference spewing nonsense numbers and set tariffs. Setting tariffs is your job. And you should do it with real metrics that are commonly accepted. If you believe that his numbers are correct, if you believe that the tariffs are warranted, put it to a vote. Know that I oppose them and you should too.
