Protect democratic integrity from billionaires' undue influence

To: Sen. Romney, Rep. Maloy, Sen. Lee

The recent events surrounding the government funding bill negotiations have raised significant concerns about undue influence from unelected individuals on the legislative process. Elon Musk, a billionaire without any official government role, appears to have exerted unwarranted sway over congressional votes through his social media platform and threats of funding primary challenges against lawmakers. This undermines the integrity of our democratic system, where elected representatives should be accountable to their constituents, not beholden to the whims of wealthy individuals with personal agendas. It is deeply troubling that a single private citizen, regardless of their wealth or public profile, can seemingly hold such power over the functioning of our government. This sets a dangerous precedent that could further erode public trust in our institutions and the fair representation of all Americans. While freedom of speech is a cherished right, using financial resources to coerce or intimidate elected officials into voting a certain way is unacceptable and antithetical to the principles of a healthy democracy. I urge you to take decisive action to safeguard the independence of Congress and ensure that legislative decisions are made through legitimate channels, free from the undue influence of moneyed interests or individuals with no official government authority. Measures should be explored to prevent billionaires from wielding disproportionate power over the political process and to hold accountable those who attempt to undermine the democratic will of the people.
