Maryland Must Close the NLets Loophole!

To: Del. Amprey, Sen. Hayes, Del. Conaway, Del. Wells, Gov. Moore

From: A constituent in Baltimore, MD

November 26

I’m asking you to act this session to close the “Nlets loophole” and protect Maryland residents from unauthorized federal access to our driver and vehicle records. Right now ICE and Homeland Security Investigations can query Maryland MVA data through Nlets with no clear state oversight. Most residents don’t know this is happening. Other states like NY, IL, MA, MN, and WA have already blocked ICE from using Nlets to pull their driver data. Maryland should join them. Unrestricted MVA data access puts immigrant communities and mixed-status families at risk and undermines trust in state agencies. Please take action to: - Prohibit automatic sharing of Maryland MVA data with ICE or other DHS agencies through Nlets. - Require public logging and reporting of all federal and out-of-state requests for DMV info. - Allow sharing only with a warrant or clearly defined legal process. Closing the Nlets loophole will protect privacy, increase transparency, and strengthen community trust. Please act now. Thank you.
