Defend State Sovereignty Against Federal Overreach on Voter Rolls

To: Sen. Lee, Rep. Owens, Sen. Curtis

From: A verified voter in Springville, UT

January 25

I am writing to urge you to publicly oppose Attorney General Pam Bondi's demands for unredacted state voter rolls and to defend Utah's sovereignty against federal overreach into election administration. While this current demand targets Minnesota, it represents a dangerous precedent that threatens every state's constitutional authority over elections. The DOJ's nationwide campaign to access state voter rolls has already failed in court. Federal judges dismissed similar lawsuits in California, Oregon, and Georgia, with the Georgia case thrown out on Friday because it was filed in the wrong district. The executive branch does not have authority over elections, and Bondi's demands represent unlawful federal intrusion on state authority. This is not about legitimate election oversight. During a Fox News interview, Bondi explicitly stated the DOJ sent the letter to demand that Governor Walz "better support President Trump." Bondi's letter directly connects the voter roll demand to the administration's personal grievances against Minnesota's elected leaders, listing complaints about sanctuary policies and welfare programs that have nothing to do with election administration. This is about punishing state leaders who refuse to comply with Trump's political agenda. Utah's election integrity depends on maintaining state control over voter information and election processes. If the federal government can intimidate Minnesota into surrendering its voter rolls based on political grievances, Utah could face the same pressure. The Tenth Amendment reserves election administration to the states, and we cannot allow the executive branch to weaponize federal power against states that refuse to forfeit their constitutional authority. I urge you to publicly oppose these demands and defend every state's right to maintain its voter rolls without executive branch interference. Our federalist system depends on protecting state sovereignty from politically motivated federal overreach, regardless of which state is currently being targeted.
