Protect Children and Teachers
To: Rep. Evans
From: A constituent in Longmont, CO
March 22, 2025
The current felonious POTUS just attempted to break another law by signing an executive order to dismantle the Department of Education. The DOE was enacted by congress and thus cannot be removed by any sitting president. That is the good news. Now here is where you are being called to action, so pay attention. Let me tell you a personal story to discuss why the DOE personally impacts me and my family. I have two school-aged children. One of children has a medical condition which requires her to have extra accommodations to ensure she is able to attend school and be successful. Now, my child is bright academically and brings joy to all she encounters. She loves princesses and all things sparkly. Without the DOE to protect these accommodations through an IEP, my child may not be able to succeed in school. I also have a son who is starting preschool. My son loves Toy Story and is always seen in his Woody cowboy boots. He is the sweetest little boy you would ever meet but has a speech delay. He is able to have speech therapy at school due to an IEP that is protected by the DOE. Now that you understand more about my family, let me tell you more about my experience with the DOE personally impacting me. I am a Registered Nurse and dedicate my life to caring for others. To get my nursing degree, I, like millions of others, had to take out student loans despite working as a waitress through school. I have been a nurse and paying on my student loans for over 8 years. As a public servant, caring for the sick, I will be eligible for loan forgiveness in 2 more years. Now let me explain the math because there are a lot of misconceptions about how student loans work. I took out 30,000 to pay for school. I have been paying into my loans for over 8 years but due to crooked interest practices, I owe 70,000. You read that right. I owe MORE THAN DOUBLE what I took out. So no, people eligible for loan forgiveness are not trying to get out of paying their fair share. I have paid off what I borrowed and then some. I just want a chance to move past this and be able to afford to live and support my family. The Department of Education is there to protect children with medical needs, people trying to survive and feed their families who are public servants looking to get loan “forgiveness” from greedy loan companies. The DOE provides lunch for kids who may otherwise not eat. The DOE protects schools by ensuring that state school boards are following federal regulations. It is there to protect children. As your constituent, I implore you to do the right thing and protect the DOE, protect children and education, at all costs. This isn’t about party lines, this is about teachers and children. This is what your constituents want you to do. Consider this, or you may find yourself serving a very short political career come time for re-election. You know what’s right. Thank you for your time.
