The executive order described threatens the safety, wellbeing and educational rights of LGBTQ+ students and their families. Banning discussions around gender identity or restricting access to facilities based on gender expression promotes discrimination and stigma. This puts an already vulnerable group at further risk of bullying, depression and self-harm. All students deserve an inclusive learning environment where they feel respected and supported. Rather than imposing blanket bans, schools should work to create affirming spaces and provide staff training on LGBTQ+ issues. Protecting parental rights is important, but not at the expense of a child's identity, privacy or mental health. I urge you to reconsider this harmful policy and instead promote diversity, compassion and evidence-based practices in our schools.
