Vote NO on Big Beautiful Bill

To: Rep. Salazar

From: A verified voter in Palmetto Bay, FL

July 2

I’m writing as a speech-language pathologist, small business owner, and advocate for individuals with disabilities to respectfully urge you to vote NO on the “Big Beautiful Bill.” While the bill may be framed as a positive step forward, key provisions pose a serious threat to the civil rights, communication access, and healthcare protections of the disabled community—particularly those who rely on AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) to express themselves, navigate daily life, and fully participate in society. Here’s how this legislation directly impacts the field of speech-language pathology and the clients we serve: • Threats to AAC Access: The bill includes proposed cuts and restrictions to Medicaid and other federal funding streams that currently cover speech-generating devices. Without these supports, thousands of individuals—including autistic children and adults with complex communication needs—will lose access to their voice. This is not just a funding issue; it is a human rights issue. • Increased Administrative Burdens: Speech-language pathologists are already navigating high caseloads, extensive documentation, and insurance red tape. This bill proposes sweeping changes that would increase provider requirements and limit flexibility in service delivery, making it harder for clinicians to provide timely, individualized care—especially in schools and underserved communities. • Erosion of IDEA and Disability Protections: Embedded language in the bill could weaken enforcement mechanisms tied to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), threatening students’ rights to receive free and appropriate education, including necessary speech-language services. • Marginalization of Disabled Voices: This legislation has moved forward without transparent input from disabled individuals and those of us who serve them. It reflects systemic disregard for the autonomy, dignity, and lived expertise of the communities most affected by its outcomes. I urge you to reject this bill in its current form and instead support legislation that uplifts the disabled community, protects Medicaid and IDEA, and expands access to communication—especially for those who use nontraditional modalities like AAC. Please stand with us in protecting the rights and voices of disabled Americans. Vote NO on the Big Beautiful Bill. Thank you for your time and commitment to our community.
