An Open Letter

To: Sen. Moody, Sen. Scott, Rep. Mast

From: A constituent in Jupiter, FL

February 27

I’m writing to ask that, in the daily work of governing, you keep in mind the moral weight of the Ten Commandments and the values they represent. In a time when politics can feel hardened and transactional, our country needs leaders who remember that power is accountable to something higher than party, profit, or popularity. First, “Thou shalt not kill” should be more than a phrase—it should be a guiding restraint. Please pursue policies that protect life and reduce violence, and approach decisions about war, weapons, policing, and public health with reverence for the human cost. When choices are made in Washington, real families live with the consequences. Second, the call to love thy neighbor—and to treat others as you want to be treated—should shape how you legislate and how you speak. That includes treating immigrants with respect and humanity. Whatever one’s views on border policy, no person should be demeaned, scapegoated, or stripped of dignity. We can uphold laws while still honoring the image of God in each person. That same love of neighbor requires respecting love and commitment in our communities, including for LGBTQ Americans. I’m asking you to reject bigotry plainly and consistently, and to help build a country where people can live safely, work honestly, worship freely, and form families without fear. Finally, please remember that judgment is not for man, but for God. In your public role, resist the temptation to condemn entire groups, to score points by shaming others, or to treat opponents as enemies. Lead with humility, and let justice be tempered by mercy. I also urge you, especially within the Republican Party, to restore ethical values over cynical division. Our nation does not need leaders who sew distrust and resentment; we need leaders who heal, tell the truth, and pursue the common good. Thank you for your service and for taking this reminder to heart.
