I am writing to urge you to oppose the recently proposed FDA policy changes that restrict access to COVID-19 booster shots for healthy individuals under 65. These changes limit booster eligibility primarily to older adults and those with underlying health conditions, potentially leaving a significant portion of the population without access to updated vaccines.
While it's acknowledged that COVID-19 tends to be less severe in younger, healthier individuals, the risk of long-term effects, including Long COVID, remains a serious concern. Restricting access to boosters could inadvertently increase the vulnerability of these populations and hinder our collective efforts to control the spread of the virus.
Furthermore, the new policy may exacerbate health disparities. Individuals without underlying conditions but with limited access to healthcare resources could find themselves at increased risk. It's crucial that vaccine policies do not inadvertently widen existing health inequities.
I urge you to advocate for:
- Equitable Vaccine Access: Ensure that all individuals, regardless of age or health status, have access to COVID-19 booster shots if they choose to receive them.
- Consideration of Long COVID Risks: Recognize and address the potential long-term impacts of COVID-19 in policy decisions, ensuring that preventive measures like boosters are accessible to mitigate these risks.
- Public Health Equity: Implement policies that prioritize equitable healthcare access, preventing further disparities in COVID-19 outcomes among different populations.
Your leadership is vital in ensuring that public health policies are inclusive and protective of all community members. I appreciate your attention to this matter and your continued commitment to the health and well-being of our constituents.
