Stop the Use of Concentration Camps for Migrants at Guantanamo Bay

To: Sen. Kaine, Rep. Wittman, Sen. Warner

From: A constituent in Midlothian, VA

February 5

I am writing to express my outrage over the reported plan to detain migrants at Guantanamo Bay. By definition, the mass detention of civilians—especially marginalized groups, held without due process in isolated facilities—constitutes a concentration camp. This is an unacceptable and deeply un-American policy that must be stopped immediately. Guantanamo Bay already has a notorious history of human rights abuses, indefinite detention, and inhumane treatment. Expanding its use to house migrants—many of whom are seeking asylum and fleeing violence—only compounds its legacy of cruelty. These individuals are not criminals; they are human beings entitled to legal protections, humane treatment, and the right to seek refuge. The use of military detention facilities for civilian populations violates our nation’s fundamental principles of justice and due process. It also risks putting the U.S. in further violation of international human rights agreements. We cannot allow our government to normalize the indefinite detention of migrants under inhumane conditions. I urge you to take a stand against this policy and push for immediate legislative action to prevent Guantanamo Bay from being used as a migrant detention site. The U.S. must commit to humane and legal immigration solutions rather than resorting to the mass incarceration of vulnerable people. Please let me know where you stand on this issue and what actions you are taking to oppose this policy. I appreciate your time and look forward to your response.
