Investigate the DOJ's Violation of the 60-Day Rule in the Ilhan Omar Search
To: Sen. Scott, Sen. Moody, Rep. Bean
From: A verified voter in Jacksonville, FL
October 13
Investigate why the Department of Justice executed a search warrant at Representative Ilhan Omar's D.C. residence just days before a Minnesota election already underway with early voting in progress.
DOJ has a longstanding policy against taking overt investigative steps within 60 days of an election precisely because targets have no meaningful opportunity to clear their name before voters go to the polls. That rule exists for good reason. If the government had urgent cause to act now, rather than waiting a few weeks, it owes the public a clear and transparent explanation. The alleged conduct is decades old. There is no public indication that evidence was at risk of destruction. Without that justification, this looks less like law enforcement and more like election interference using the machinery of the Justice Department.
The 60-day rule is not a technicality. It is a firewall between prosecution and politics. If DOJ broke with that norm, it must show its work completely and publicly, so the justification is self-evident. Silence in the face of unusual circumstances is not neutrality. It is a choice. Demand a full accounting of why this action could not wait until after the election.
