The recent nationwide injunction blocking President Trump's attempt to end birthright citizenship is a vital step in upholding the 14th Amendment and protecting a core constitutional right. This misguided policy would have stripped citizenship from children born in the United States to non-citizen parents, undermining over a century of legal precedent and American values of equality and inclusivity. The injunction properly halts an overreach of executive authority that threatened to create a discriminatory two-tier system of citizenship. Maintaining birthright citizenship preserves a fundamental tenet of our democracy – that all persons born on U.S. soil are entitled to the rights and privileges of citizenship, regardless of their parents' immigration status. This injunction affirms the judiciary's role in safeguarding constitutional principles against politically-motivated attacks. A firm stand must be taken to ensure this injunction is robustly defended against any further efforts to subvert one of our nation's core tenets of justice and equal rights.
