I write to demand that Congress immediately investigate Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and Attorney General Todd Blanche for potential violations of federal election law, prosecutorial ethics standards, and the Justice Department's 60-day rule prohibiting overt investigative actions against political candidates within 60 days of an election. On October 12, 2026, just 22 days before the midterm elections, federal agents executed a search warrant on Representative Ilhan Omar's Washington-area home. This timing directly violates the Justice Department's longstanding 60-day rule, a policy designed to prevent executive branch interference in elections and ensure law enforcement remains impartial during election cycles. Before the search, Vice President JD Vance publicly declared that Omar "committed immigration fraud" and stated the White House was seeking "legal remedies" to investigate and build a case against her. Secretary Mullin similarly announced an investigation was underway and suggested "something's going to happen." These pre-trial declarations of guilt violate prosecutorial ethics guidelines requiring federal officials to remain neutral and refrain from prejudging cases. The pattern suggests coordination, not routine law enforcement. President Trump attacked Omar at a political rally just two days before the search, focusing on her Somali heritage and suggesting federal action was forthcoming. The sequence of public attack, federal search, and pre-emptive guilt declarations raises serious questions about deliberate election interference. This is not an isolated incident. The Department of Homeland Security has pressured states to share voter registration databases under the guise of immigration verification. A whistleblower alleged that USCIS staff were directed to access state voter registration websites using data that DHS officials themselves acknowledged was "incomplete and unreliable." These actions suggest systematic interference with voter registration and election integrity. The constitutional standard for impeachment addresses "high crimes and misdemeanors" that constitute abuse of public trust and harm to society itself. When cabinet-level officials deliberately violate the 60-day rule to attack political opponents, publicly declare guilt before investigation concludes, and coordinate federal law enforcement with presidential political attacks, they undermine prosecutorial independence and compromise election integrity. These actions threaten democratic governance. I ask you to demand a full investigation into whether these officials violated federal election law, breached prosecutorial ethics standards, or engaged in conduct warranting impeachment. Congress has the power and responsibility to investigate. I urge you to exercise it.
