Restore Full NIH Funding and Reverse Research Cuts

To: Sen. Kaine, Rep. McClellan, Sen. Warner

From: A constituent in Richmond, VA

March 19

I need you to fight to restore full NIH funding and reverse the administration's cuts to biomedical research grants. A recent STAT survey of nearly 1,000 federally funded researchers shows the damage is accelerating, not slowing down. More than a quarter of NIH-funded researchers have already laid off lab members. Over 40% have canceled planned research projects entirely. Two-thirds are now telling their students to pursue careers outside academia because the future looks so bleak. Some labs are shutting down completely. Even after courts reversed some grant terminations and Congress rejected budget slashes, only 35% of researchers whose grants were cut or delayed have seen their funding fully restored. That means 65% are still operating in crisis mode a year later. This isn't just about researchers losing jobs. When we gut the NIH, we lose the next generation of scientists, abandon promising treatments, and hand our competitive advantage to other countries. American biomedical research built our economy and saved millions of lives. We can't let it collapse. Push for immediate restoration of all delayed or terminated NIH grants and oppose any future cuts to the agency's budget.
