Oppose Clemency or Pardon for Tina Peters
To: Gov. Polis
From: A constituent in Denver, CO
March 5
I am writing to urge you to oppose any clemency or pardon for Tina Peters. As someone who believes in the integrity of our electoral system and the rule of law, I find it essential that those who deliberately undermine election security face the full consequences of their actions.
Tina Peters was convicted of serious crimes related to her breach of election security protocols while serving as Mesa County Clerk. She used her position of trust to facilitate unauthorized access to voting equipment, compromising the security of Colorado's election infrastructure. This was not a mistake or oversight but a calculated effort to undermine the systems that protect every voter's right to have their ballot counted accurately and securely.
Granting clemency or a pardon in this case would send a dangerous message that elected officials can violate their oaths of office and compromise election security without facing meaningful accountability. Election officials across the country must know that breaching security protocols and facilitating unauthorized access to voting systems will result in serious legal consequences, not political rehabilitation.
The integrity of our elections depends on the trustworthiness of those who administer them. When an election official betrays that trust, as Peters did, the appropriate response is to uphold the judicial process and the sentence handed down by the court. Anything less undermines public confidence in both our electoral system and our justice system.
I ask that you publicly oppose any effort to grant clemency or a pardon to Tina Peters and make clear that protecting election security and holding those who violate it accountable remains a priority. Our democracy depends on officials who respect the law and the systems designed to protect every citizen's vote.
