Condemn violence—don’t encourage it

To: Sen. Grassley, Sen. Ernst

I write as a concerned Iowan who cares deeply about our democratic institutions and the safety of all citizens—Republicans, Democrats, independents, and others alike. Political violence has no place in our country. When leaders accuse “the left” of violence, or use inflammatory rhetoric, they heighten divisions, risk retaliation, and erode the norms that protect our democracy. The facts are clear: • Reuters has identified at least 300 cases of political violence since January 6, 2021. In the first six months of 2025 alone, there were about 150 politically motivated attacks—nearly double the same period in 2024. • Research shows right-wing extremist actors are significantly more likely to commit violent acts than left-wing extremist actors. • Surveys indicate around one in four Republicans support political violence under some circumstances, a much higher share than Democrats or independents. Examples: • After the recent killing of Charlie Kirk, Donald Trump said we must “beat the hell out of radical left lunatics.” • He has a long record of similar remarks: telling supporters to “knock the crap out of” protesters and tweeting “when the looting starts, the shooting starts.” • Recent tragedies, like the Minnesota shootings of Democratic legislators and their spouses, underscore the real danger. What I am asking of you: 1. Speak out clearly and consistently against political violence from all sides—including from members of your own party. 2. Reject sweeping accusations that blame “the left” without evidence. 3. Support policies that reduce threats and discourage violent rhetoric. 4. Remember that you represent all Iowans, not just Republican voters. I urge you to lead by example. It is not enough to condemn violence after tragedy; it is necessary to prevent it, including by rejecting language that normalizes aggression or demonizes broad swaths of Americans. I also call on you to walk back and correct any past statements you may have made that unfairly accused or disparaged people on the left, as those words carry weight and contribute to the climate of division we all should be working to end. Iowa deserves leaders who build trust, calm fears, and uphold the norms of democracy. Thank you for your time. I hope you will act with courage and integrity.
