No Pardons for Domestic Terrorists—Impeach Trump Now
I am writing with outrage and deep concern over Donald Trump’s May 28 statement from the Oval Office, in which he said he is considering pardons for the men convicted in the 2020 plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
This was not a protest. It was a domestic terrorism plot. Fourteen men, including members of the Wolverine Watchmen militia, conducted weapons training, surveilled the governor’s home, built explosives, and discussed blowing up a bridge to delay law enforcement. Two ringleaders, Adam Fox and Barry Croft Jr., were convicted and sentenced to 16 and 19 years for conspiracy to kidnap and use weapons of mass destruction.
Now Trump wants to reward them—not despite this, but because of it.
Let me be clear: this is an endorsement of political violence. It is an attack on the rule of law. And it is yet another example of Trump using his platform not to defend democracy—but to incite and reward those who try to destroy it.
Congress must not remain silent. We are no longer in the realm of “policy differences.” We are watching an authoritarian threat unfold in real time. And your duty is not to party or personality, but to the Constitution.
If a former (or sitting) president can pardon convicted domestic terrorists who plotted to overthrow a state government, and face no consequences, then our democracy is already in free fall.
I urge you to:
1. Publicly condemn Trump’s statements and make clear that political violence will never be tolerated.
2. Launch immediate inquiries and consider impeachment proceedings.
3. Introduce legislation barring future presidents from using the pardon power to absolve individuals convicted of violent attempts to subvert democracy.
History is watching. Do not let cowardice or complacency win.
