Support Anthropic's Refusal to Enable Government Surveillance I am writing to urge you to publicly support Dario Amodei and Anthropic in their decision to refuse allowing their artificial intelligence technology to be used for surveillance of Americans. This principled stance represents exactly the kind of corporate responsibility we need when fundamental civil liberties are at stake. Anthropic has drawn a clear line against enabling mass surveillance capabilities that could be weaponized against citizens. This decision carries significant business risk for the company, making their commitment to protecting Americans' privacy rights even more noteworthy. When corporations prioritize constitutional protections over political pressure and potential government contracts, elected officials should amplify and defend that choice. I am asking you to take concrete action by issuing a public statement commending Anthropic's decision and calling on other technology companies to adopt similar policies protecting Americans from warrantless surveillance. Your voice matters in establishing norms around how emerging AI technologies can and cannot be deployed against the public. The precedent being set right now will determine whether artificial intelligence becomes a tool for mass monitoring of citizens or whether we maintain meaningful privacy protections in the digital age. Companies that resist pressure to compromise civil liberties should receive vocal support from legislators who claim to value constitutional rights. This is not a partisan issue. Americans across the political spectrum oppose unchecked government surveillance. Recent reporting about Kansas secretly compiling lists of transgender residents and confiscating identification documents demonstrates exactly why we need technology companies to refuse participation in surveillance infrastructure that can be turned against vulnerable populations. I urge you to stand with Anthropic and make clear that you support companies that refuse to enable surveillance of Americans. Your constituents deserve to know where you stand when corporate leaders show more courage in defending our rights than many elected officials have demonstrated.
