Veto SB5974

To: Gov. Ferguson

From: A verified voter in West Richland, WA

March 10

I am writing to respectfully urge you to veto SB 5974. Sheriffs are one of the few law enforcement officials in Washington who are directly elected by the people they serve. This system exists for an important reason: it ensures that local voters—not distant bureaucracies—have the ultimate authority to decide who holds that office. SB 5974 undermines that principle by allowing the removal of a duly elected sheriff through a process controlled by unelected officials. While accountability for public officials is essential, the power to remove someone chosen by voters should remain primarily with those same voters through existing mechanisms such as elections, recalls, or the courts. Transferring this authority to an unelected body risks weakening local democratic control and eroding public trust in government. It sets a concerning precedent in which the choices of local communities can be overridden by administrative processes rather than by the people themselves. Washington has long valued local governance and the right of communities to choose their own leaders. SB 5974 moves in the opposite direction by centralizing power and diminishing voter authority. For these reasons, I respectfully ask that you veto SB 5974 and preserve the fundamental right of Washington voters to choose—and remove—their own sheriffs. Thank you for your time and consideration.
