An Open Letter
To: Rep. Raskin
From: A constituent in Derwood, MD
April 11
I'm writing to urge you and other House Democrats to collaborate with sensible House Republicans to pass legislation that limits executive office power. This power is currently protected by Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, Section 332 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, Section 201 of the Trade Act of 1974, and the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977. Some of these protections are nearly 100 years old. I believe the President is abusing these acts to benefit the wealthiest individuals in our country by manipulating the stock market. For example, on April 9th, at 9:37 AM, Donald Trump posted on social media that it was a great time to buy stocks. Later that day, at 1:18 PM, he announced the suspension of tariffs on over 75 countries, causing the stock market to spike. Why are you not outraged by this? I challenge you to work with House Republicans to pass legislation that limits presidential power in matters of the United States' economic interests. Such legislation should require Congressional approval for policies related to international trade. I look forward to your response.
