The President's declaration of a public safety emergency and federal takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C. is an alarming overreach of power. Crime rates in the nation's capital have actually fallen significantly in recent years, counter to the dystopian picture being painted. Deploying 800 National Guard troops and reassigning 120 FBI agents for patrol duties is a drastic and unnecessary escalation that will only breed more conflict. Rather than resorting to draconian measures, we should be investing in community-based solutions to address the root causes of crime through economic opportunity, education, mental health resources, and restorative justice programs. The citizens of D.C. deserve to have their voices heard and self-governance respected. This federal intervention undermines democracy and the will of D.C. residents. I urge you to reverse course, withdraw the National Guard, and return control of the MPD to local authorities. Stoking fear and seizing power through martial law is not the answer. We need leaders who will bring people together, not divide us further through inflammatory rhetoric and authoritarian tactics. The nation's capital should be a shining example of freedom and justice, not a militarized zone. Please stand up for D.C.'s home rule and the rights of all Americans.
