Please do not vote for the Save Act

To: Sen. Budd, Sen. Tillis

From: A constituent in Raleigh, NC

March 21

Please do not vote for the SAVE Act, reporting from the Heritage Foundation and from several states have shown that the issue of undocumented individuals voting in our election is minuscule. The Heritage Foundation found that only 23 undocumented individuals illegally registered to vote over a course 19 years (2003-2022), this is a negligible amount people who risk themselves to dire consequences for their illegal acts. Americans already have an unimpressive track record when it comes to showing up to the voting polls, why impose more obstacles such as requiring citizens to have a passport or a birth certificate handy? What was the point of the Real ID? The inconvenience of having to obtain a new birth certificate if the original one was lost or having to find an alternate option if your last name has changed will push folk to not even bother voting, they could get a passport but that requires money people may not have just lying around. This bill may sound good, but undocumented people voting is already illegal and there are punishments in place, the fact is this will only discourage citizens from voting when ideally we should be making voting as convenient as safely possible. You have the opportunity to stand with the people and make our democracy actually American, I propose you fight for making American Great, not MAGA because history shows that America has been pretty bad for many groups of citizens since it’s inception relative to those who did enjoy the fruits of what this country had to offer, but that is another topic for another day. Just please consider us Americans.
