Demand Criminal Prosecution for Federal Obstruction of Minnesota Investigation

To: Sen. Lee, Sen. Curtis

From: A constituent in Smithfield, UT

January 25

I am writing to demand you take immediate action beyond litigation to address the federal obstruction of Minnesota's investigation into the January 7, 2026 fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. The U.S. Attorney's office has blocked the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension from investigating these deaths, denying state investigators access to case materials, scene evidence, and investigative interviews. This is not a matter for lawsuits alone. This requires criminal prosecution. I urge you to introduce emergency legislation establishing felony charges for any federal agent or official who obstructs state investigations, destroys evidence, or tampers with crime scenes involving federal law enforcement shootings on Minnesota soil. These charges must carry mandatory minimum sentences of at least ten years and cannot be subject to federal pardon. Minnesota must assert its sovereign criminal jurisdiction over deaths that occur within state borders. BCA Superintendent Drew Evans confirmed his agency was forced to withdraw after initially being promised a joint investigation with the FBI. Governor Tim Walz has stated that federal officials, including the president, vice president, and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, have already made verifiably false statements about this case. When those directing an investigation have prejudged the outcome, evidence preservation becomes critically suspect. Every day Minnesota investigators remain excluded increases the risk that evidence has been destroyed or manipulated. Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty is exploring options for a state-level investigation, but she needs legislative authority to compel evidence preservation and prosecute federal obstruction. Minnesota must also establish an independent state forensic team with authority to seize and preserve evidence in federal law enforcement shootings, with criminal penalties for anyone who interferes. Renee Good was a 37-year-old Minneapolis mother of three. Alex Pretti's Second Amendment rights were violated before he was killed. Both deserve justice, not a cover-up. Introduce this legislation immediately and authorize criminal charges against any federal official who has obstructed this investigation or tampered with evidence.
