Reject legislation threatening civil liberties of nonprofit organizations

To: Sen. Kaine, Rep. Connolly, Sen. Warner

November 11

This legislation poses a grave threat to civil liberties and the ability of nonprofit organizations to operate freely without fear of political retaliation. Granting the Treasury Secretary unilateral authority to revoke the tax-exempt status of any group deemed a "terrorist supporting organization," without requiring evidence or explanation, is a dangerously broad overreach of power. It opens the door for the administration to weaponize this designation against ideological opponents and silence dissenting voices under the guise of national security. Nonprofits play a vital role in our democracy, advocating for social change, providing essential services, and protecting human rights. Stripping them of their tax-exempt status based on unsubstantiated accusations could cripple their operations and chill free speech. This bill undermines due process and lacks adequate safeguards against abuse of power. Moreover, the combination of this provision with hostage relief raises concerns that it is a ploy to push through the contentious nonprofit measure with minimal scrutiny. These issues are better addressed separately to avoid compromising fundamental civil liberties. I implore you to reject this misguided legislation and uphold the constitutional rights of all Americans to freely associate, express dissent, and engage in civic activism without fear of reprisal from the government. Protecting our democratic institutions requires vigilance against any attempt to concentrate unchecked authority in the hands of a few.
