Disgraceful abandonment of constitutional rights
To: Rep. Baumgartner
From: A constituent in Waitsburg, WA
May 5
I was disgusted to hear. of your and other republican’s performance as a member of the House Judiciary Committee. Our constitution guarantees EVERYONE due process. We are a nation of immigrants. Every single one of us with the exception of native Americans came from somewhere. Everyone who comes is extended the right and dignity to be treated equally under the law. Our country is wealthy, and used to stand for democracy and still we NEVER accepted as many refugees as we are really able to. The legislation you approved features provisions to increase the detention and deportation of immigrants. You voted against Democratic amendments requiring immigrants to receive due process and prohibiting Immigration and Customs Enforcement from detaining and deporting U.S. citizens!!!The National Foundation for American Policy, estimates the $45 billion in new detention funding in the bill is enough to detain 5 million people or at least 1 million a year over five years. It is disgraceful that you are taking away funding from programs that assist and aid both Americans and others that provide international humanitarian support and development and instead add money to authorize what has become a reign of terror and human rights abuses through the illegal detainment of people of colour and their deportment- including the deportment of US citizens. I also read of a port couple who had gain asylum from Venezuela and were in the long paper work process. He was sent to the prison in El Salvador unjustly and she was falsely told that if she dropped her claim they would send her back to Venezuela and reunite her with her 2 year old Venezuelan daughter who was taken from her when the mother was placed in detention. She chose to return and be reunited with her daughter only to be told on the plane that they were not bringing her daughter. shameful. You are deporting people without cause. Deporting American citizens, and then lying to the people who you trick into deporting. Your mission trip to Africa must have been incredibly insulated for you to not see the wealth that America has and the good that programs do and the preventative measures in curbing immigration that those small project do to save America larger funds I. The future. The amount of money being wasted in these illegal acts and the lawsuits that are coming from them is unprecedented, unnecessary, and shamefully embarrassing. Our name and stature in the world has plummeted.
