I am outraged by the Social Security Administration’s decision to eliminate public affairs staff and traditional communications channels, and instead move all updates exclusively to Elon Musk’s platform, X (formerly Twitter). This decision follows massive cuts by the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which Musk oversees — and it reeks of corruption. This is not about efficiency. It’s about control. DOGE’s cuts are gutting SSA services, eliminating thousands of jobs, and dismantling public access — all while forcing millions of seniors and disabled Americans to use a private platform they may not even understand. This is especially cruel given that Social Security beneficiaries are among the least likely to use social media. It’s also a flagrant conflict of interest. Musk now controls both the agency slashing SSA resources and the for-profit platform being handed exclusive access to government messaging. He stands to profit enormously — not just in ad revenue, but by harvesting user data and driving traffic to a site that increasingly functions as a propaganda machine. Centralizing federal communications there gives him unprecedented control over public discourse. This is unacceptable. I urge you to immediately investigate DOGE’s actions and the SSA’s communications shift. Protect Social Security from privatization, restore public access, and prevent billionaires from hijacking essential government services for power and profit.
