Opposition to Proposed President Donald Trump Freedom Highway Designation
To: Rep. Fowler Arthur, Sen. O'Brien
From: A verified voter in Chesterland, OH
December 30
I am writing as an Ohio resident to express my strong opposition to House Bill 638, which proposes designating a portion of Interstate 70 in Franklin County as the President Donald Trump Freedom Highway. While roadway naming can be symbolic, this particular designation risks deepening political division at a time when many Ohioans are asking for unity and a focus on shared priorities.
Ohio law does not prohibit naming highways after living individuals. There are no statewide standards that limit whom the legislature may choose to honor. Even so, the absence of a legal restriction does not make this proposal beneficial for the public. Highways are shared infrastructure used by all Ohioans, and naming them after highly polarizing political figures, regardless of party, sends a message that our public spaces are being used for partisan symbolism rather than for shared purpose.
Ohioans deserve public assets that feel welcoming and neutral, not ones that risk alienating large segments of the population. At a time when our state faces pressing issues such as infrastructure maintenance, economic development, and community well-being, debates over politically charged naming proposals distract from the work that most directly improves people’s lives.
I respectfully urge you to reject House Bill 638 and instead consider naming opportunities that highlight Ohio’s shared history, local heroes, or contributions that bring people together.
Thank you for your time and for your service to the people of Ohio.
