Call SB 1271 to the Floor - Defend CT Libraries from Censorship

To: Rep. Dillon, Sen. Winfield

From: A verified voter in New Haven, CT

May 29, 2025

I am writing to urge you to support SB 1271, the Library Freedom to Read Act, and to ask leadership to call this critical bill to the floor for a vote immediately. The recent May 24, 2025 Fifth Circuit Court ruling (10-7 decision) has declared that public library patrons have no First Amendment right to access books and that viewpoint discrimination can dictate library collections. This unprecedented ruling threatens intellectual freedom in Connecticut libraries. SB 1271 would protect our libraries from censorship and safeguard the freedom to read for all Connecticut residents. This bipartisan legislation is essential to ensure libraries remain community anchors grounded in access and equity. Please support SB 1271 and encourage leadership to bring it to the floor for a vote.
