POTUS and AG Lack Authority to Unilaterally Interpret Laws

To: Sen. Kaine, Rep. Kiggans, Sen. Warner

From: A constituent in Virginia Beach, VA

February 19

The separation of powers enshrined in the U.S. Constitution makes clear that the executive branch, including the President and Attorney General, lacks the authority to unilaterally interpret laws. That critical function falls solely to the judicial branch to ensure an appropriate system of checks and balances. Permitting the executive to redefine laws could enable an abuse of power and undermine the rule of law that safeguards our democracy. As elected representatives, you have a responsibility to uphold the Constitution and prevent any erosion of the distinct roles delineated for each branch of government. I urge you to take a stand against any executive overreach that infringes on the judiciary's role in authoritatively construing the meaning and application of laws.
