An Open Letter
To: Rep. Buchanan
From: A constituent in Ruskin, FL
March 16
I am writing as a concerned constituent to ask why Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) continues to inflate savings figures that are later exposed as falsehoods, while leaving chaos in its wake. A recent New York Times article (March 13, 2025, “See How Elon Musk’s Team Inflated, Deleted and Rewrote Its Savings Claims”) details how DOGE’s “wall of receipts” has been riddled with errors—claiming billions in savings that don’t hold up, like an $8 billion contract that was really $8 million, or a $1.9 billion cut credited despite being canceled last year.
These aren’t isolated mistakes. The article shows a pattern: numbers are inflated, contracts added and deleted without explanation, and errors corrected only to reappear. Meanwhile, Musk’s team has disrupted federal operations—firing workers then rehiring them, halting programs then restoring them, and targeting small agencies while avoiding big spending like defense. It’s erratic and, frankly, destructive.
I value fiscal responsibility, but this isn’t it. Why does Musk get a pass to exaggerate savings and destabilize government functions with no accountability? His track record—slashing Twitter to near collapse, overpromising at Tesla—suggests he destroys more than he builds. Why should we trust him with taxpayer money when his claims don’t match reality?
I urge you to demand transparency and real oversight of DOGE. We deserve better than inflated lies and reckless cuts. Please let me know your stance on this and what you’ll do to ensure Musk’s actions align with the truth and our interests.
