As your constituent, I urge you to block the EPA’s rollback of PFAS drinking water protections and defend strong, enforceable limits that keep North Carolinians safe. I am writing to ask you to oppose any effort that weakens federal drinking water standards for PFAS, especially for communities in North Carolina that have already lived with the consequences of contamination. North Carolina has already had to set interim groundwater limits for PFAS, including extremely low limits for PFOA and PFOS, which shows how serious and persistent this problem is in our state. The EPA’s current drinking water rule already includes enforceable limits for several PFAS, including PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFNA, and GenX, and public water systems are expected to monitor, disclose, and reduce these contaminants when they exceed the standards. North Carolina families should not be forced to absorb the cost of pollution that they did not cause. PFAS are widely recognized as “forever chemicals” because they do not break down easily, can remain in the environment for years, and can contaminate drinking water, food, and soil. State health information also notes that PFAS exposure has been linked to serious health harms, including developmental effects, immune system impacts, and some cancers. Rolling back the federal limits would undermine the protections North Carolina communities need and leave local water systems and families with less certainty and less protection. Please stand with North Carolina residents, public water systems, and local governments by opposing any rollback of PFAS drinking water limits. The federal government should keep strong standards in place, not weaken them after years of delay and public harm.
