Demand Resignation of Congressman Tony Gonzales Following Sexual Harassment Allegations
To: Sen. Kim, Sen. Booker
From: A verified voter in Morris Plains, NJ
February 25
I am writing to demand the immediate resignation of Congressman Tony Gonzales following credible allegations that he pressured a staffer, Regina Ann Santos-Aviles, into a sexual relationship. Ms. Santos-Aviles subsequently died by suicide. These allegations represent an unconscionable abuse of power that disqualifies him from serving in Congress.
The severity of these allegations far exceeds cases that have previously resulted in congressional resignations. When Senator Al Franken faced allegations of making inappropriate jokes, he was pressured to resign by his own party colleagues. The contrast is stark and unacceptable. A staffer is dead, and the alleged perpetrator continues to serve because party leadership prioritizes maintaining a congressional majority over basic accountability.
Representative Nancy Mace has announced plans to force a vote on releasing Congress members' sexual misconduct reports in response to these allegations. This is a necessary step, but it is not sufficient. Gonzales must resign immediately, and if he refuses, Congress must expel him. No political calculation justifies allowing someone credibly accused of such conduct to remain in office.
Sexual harassment and abuse of power in congressional offices create hostile work environments where staffers, particularly women, cannot safely perform their duties. When members of Congress face no consequences for such behavior, it sends a clear message that political power shields predators from accountability. This pattern must end.
I urge you to publicly call for Gonzales' resignation and to support any expulsion proceedings if he refuses to step down. Your constituents deserve to know that you will not tolerate sexual harassment and abuse of power in Congress, regardless of party affiliation or political convenience. The integrity of our democratic institutions depends on holding elected officials to basic standards of ethical conduct.
This is a moment that demands moral clarity and decisive action. I expect you to act accordingly.
