An Open Letter

To: Rep. Harrigan, Sen. Budd, Sen. Tillis

From: A constituent in Denver, NC

Support the Stars and Stripes Editorial Independence Act of 2026 (https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/senate-bill/4614/text). Military members deserve free and fair reporting. Dwight Eisenhower said so. Reportorial independence was guaranteed by a Pentagon Rule until January 2026. Of course, the Pentagon may forbid the dissemination of classified information, battle plans, troop strengths and dispositions, etc. However, the Pentagon has no business dictating editorial policy decisions. There was nothing classified about the news that USS Lincoln’s families were receiving threats of suicide, inadequate food, extended deployment with no shore leave. Censorship is anti-American. Our only newspaper while overseas should tell the truth without fear or favor. Support the Stars and Stripes Editorial Independence Act of 2026.
