Support a Ban on Mid-Decade Redistricting

To: Rep. McClain Delaney, Sen. Van Hollen, Sen. Alsobrooks

August 8

I want you to support efforts to ban mid-decade redistricting schemes like the one currently being attempted in Texas, and to back the longstanding Democratic proposal to end partisan gerrymandering nationwide by requiring independent redistricting commissions in every state. Mid-decade redistricting undermines the stability of representative government and manipulates electoral maps for short-term partisan gain. It erodes public trust, weakens democratic institutions, and deprives citizens of fair representation. Texas’s current actions are a dangerous precedent that, if left unchecked, could spread to other states. Ending partisan gerrymandering is essential to ensuring that voters choose their representatives not the other way around. Independent redistricting commissions have already proven successful in multiple states, producing fairer maps, increasing competition, and restoring public confidence in the democratic process. Take a clear stand in favor of both reforms: a federal prohibition on mid-decade redistricting and a nationwide requirement for independent, nonpartisan redistricting commissions. These steps will help ensure that our democracy reflects the will of the people, not the designs of political operatives.
