An Open Letter

To: Sen. Alsobrooks, Sen. Van Hollen, Rep. Olszewski

I am writing to you as a constituent of Harford County, Maryland to express serious concern about Donald Trump’s mental state, and the danger I believe it poses to our democracy should he be reinstated or granted further power. Over the years, many mental health professionals have raised alarms about behaviors they deem alarming—grandiosity, impulsivity, poor judgment, disregard for facts, and repeated patterns of deception. For example, a letter signed by more than 200 health professionals argued that “malignant narcissism” could render him “grossly unfit for leadership.”  Others have pointed to signs of cognitive decline, including diminished verbal fluency, tangential thinking, and perseveration.  In The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump, 27 psychiatrists and mental health experts assessed that his psychological profile could pose serious risk.  These are not mere partisan attacks in my view—they point to structural risks. The office of the President demands sound judgment, realism, stability, and integrity: qualities I believe are jeopardized if someone in such a position cannot reliably distinguish reality from his own narratives, control impulses, or weigh long-term consequences. I urge you to take the following steps: 1 Support a full, independent medical and neurological evaluation (if permissible under law) to assess any cognitive decline or mental impairment.

2 Advocate for stronger fitness review mechanisms for any candidate running for high office, including clearer mental health and cognitive screening.

3 Hold all presidents and candidates to standards of psychological accountability, including transparency about mental fitness, record-keeping, and public access to assessments.

4 Push for stronger safeguards in our institutions (Congress, courts, media) so that no single individual can leverage cognitive or psychological instability to subvert democratic norms unchecked.

As your constituent, I expect you to take mental fitness seriously. If leadership is held by someone with impaired judgment or compromised capacity, the risks to civil liberties, human rights, and national security are real. Thank you for your service, and I hope to see you champion measures that protect our country from leadership that is unstable or dangerous.
