Response to call with Pres. Trump
To: Gov. Braun
From: A verified voter in Wakarusa, IN
November 17
Your recent statement confirms exactly why so many Hoosiers oppose this mid-cycle redistricting push. You openly admit you are coordinating map strategy with President Trump, not with the people of Indiana. Redistricting is supposed to serve voters — not a political agenda in Washington.
Our maps were already redrawn in 2021 and adjusted again in 2023. There is no legal or census-based justification for another redraw now. Calling a special session to “ensure the MAGA agenda is successful in Congress” is not a defense of fair representation — it is a partisan objective stated plainly.
You also claim Indiana must “counter gerrymandering in California and Illinois,” but other states’ maps have no bearing on ours. California uses an independent commission approved by its voters. Using other states as justification for rushing a map overhaul here is disingenuous at best.
Furthermore, attacking your own Republican senators for not immediately endorsing this plan and accusing them of “hiding in the dark” ignores the reality: many Hoosiers — across the political spectrum — do not want this rushed, mid-cycle process. Their hesitation reflects responsibility, not cowardice.
You are correct that Hoosiers deserve to know where their legislators stand. We also deserve to know why our governor is taking instructions from a former president on how Indiana should shape its districts.
Fair maps should be drawn transparently, in alignment with the decennial census, and without partisan interference. This special session does not meet those standards.
