Enforce 14th Amendment against Trump's insurrection, prevent re-election
To: Sen. Tillis, Sen. Budd, Rep. Adams
From: A constituent in Charlotte, NC
January 6
The 14th Amendment was enacted after the Civil War to prevent insurrectionists from holding federal office. Section 3 disqualifies any person who has taken an oath to uphold the Constitution from holding office if they "have engaged in insurrection or rebellion" against the United States. On January 6th, 2021, Donald Trump urged his supporters to "fight like hell" and march on the Capitol, leading to the violent attack seeking to overturn the 2020 election results. Legal scholars argue this amounted to insurrection under Section 3, disqualifying Trump from being certified as president. Enforcing this provision upholds democratic norms and deters future insurrections. I urge you to explore avenues to prevent Donald Trump from being certified as president based on his role in the January 6th events which violated his oath to the Constitution.
