Oppose the Dismantling of Indiana Public Schools
To: Sen. Alting, Rep. Klinker
From: A verified voter in Lafayette, IN
January 14
I am writing as a concerned constituent and proud graduate of public schools to express my strong opposition to the proposed legislation that would dissolve five Indiana school districts and convert them into charter schools. This bill poses significant risks to the stability and quality of public education in our state.
Public schools are essential pillars of our communities, providing equitable educational opportunities to all students, regardless of socioeconomic background. Converting entire districts into charter schools undermines this mission by diverting public funds to privately managed entities that often lack transparency and accountability. This shift could lead to increased disparities in educational resources, leaving vulnerable students behind.
Furthermore, charter schools frequently operate with less oversight, which can result in inconsistent educational standards and financial mismanagement. As someone deeply involved in managing public school finances, I have seen firsthand how critical transparency and responsible budgeting are to maintaining quality education. Weakening public school systems in favor of charter operations threatens the livelihoods of dedicated educators and staff who work tirelessly to support Indiana’s students.
Instead of dismantling public school districts, I urge you to support initiatives that strengthen and improve our public education system. Investment in teacher development, updated classroom resources, and student support services will yield far better outcomes for our communities than diverting funds to charter schools.
I respectfully ask that you oppose this bill and advocate for policies that prioritize the success of Indiana’s public schools. Our children, families, and communities deserve a commitment to equitable, high-quality education.
