Members of the United States Congress, I am writing as a concerned citizen who believes our nation is at its best when dignity, restraint, and respect guide our public discourse. Recent reports regarding a social media post attributed to former President Donald Trump, allegedly portraying former President Barack Obama in a dehumanizing manner, have stirred deep concern across many communities. Whether one approaches politics from the right, left, or center, language that appears to diminish the humanity of another person undermines the moral fabric that holds a diverse republic together. Leadership in America has always required more than policy positions; it demands an example worthy of imitation. When rhetoric drifts toward insult or imagery that can be interpreted as degrading, it risks normalizing contempt rather than encouraging thoughtful disagreement. Our children, our congregations, and our neighborhoods are watching how those in authority respond. I respectfully urge Congress to reaffirm, in both word and action, the expectation that public leadership must reject communication that fuels division or echoes painful chapters of our history. This need not be a partisan exercise. A simple, unified commitment to civility would remind the nation that disagreement does not require dehumanization. Furthermore, I encourage you to consider constructive ways to promote healthier civic engagement—whether through bipartisan statements, ethical standards, or initiatives that foster respectful dialogue. The strength of the United States has never been uniformity of thought, but rather the ability to contend vigorously while still recognizing the inherent worth of every person.
