I am writing to urge you to oppose the nomination of former Representative Steve Pearce as Director of the Bureau of Land Management. This nomination poses a direct threat to the 245 million acres of public lands that the BLM manages on behalf of all Americans.
Steve Pearce has a documented history of working to sell off public lands and strip away critical land and water protections. His record demonstrates a consistent pattern of prioritizing private interests over public stewardship. He has profited millions from the oil and gas industry, creating deep political and personal financial ties that disqualify him from leading an agency tasked with protecting our shared natural heritage.
The BLM Director must serve the public interest, not corporate profits. Pearce's background as a long-time opponent of public lands makes him fundamentally unsuited for this role. Americans depend on BLM lands for recreation, clean water, wildlife habitat, and economic opportunity through tourism and outdoor industries. Placing someone with Pearce's record in charge of these lands would accelerate their exploitation and potential sale, permanently removing them from public ownership.
There is a critical window to stop this nomination in the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee before it reaches the full Senate floor. If enough committee members oppose Pearce, the nomination will be blocked entirely. Your voice on this committee carries significant weight in protecting public lands for current and future generations.
I urge you to oppose Steve Pearce's nomination and vote against his confirmation in committee. Our public lands require a director committed to conservation and public access, not someone with a track record of working to dismantle the protections these lands desperately need. Please stand with your constituents who value these irreplaceable natural resources.
