Investigate Religious Dark Money Flooding Idaho's Proposition 1 Campaign
To: Sen. Cook, Gov. Little
From: A constituent in Ammon, ID
October 14
Investigate the flood of religious institutional money pouring into Idaho's Proposition 1 campaign and protect our ballot process from out-of-state influence. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints confirmed it donated $1 million to defeat Prop 1, a measure that would restore reproductive rights for Idaho residents. That money is now funding a coordinated media blitz across social media, radio, TV, and streaming, organized by an interfaith coalition built by the Idaho Family Policy Center, the Catholic Diocese of Boise, and LDS representative Tom Luna.
Luna described this effort on the Neal Larson radio show as building an "army" of church members across the state. These are not individual Idahoans speaking their conscience. These are institutional religious organizations deploying millions to override a citizen-led initiative. Idaho voters put Proposition 1 on the November 3 ballot. They should decide it free from a coordinated, well-funded campaign bankrolled by religious institutions that answer to no Idaho voter.
I want full transparency on every dollar flowing into the No on Prop 1 campaign from religious organizations, and I want Idaho's campaign finance laws enforced to the letter.
