Thank you for coming to the Coast to speak earlier this and to make the conversation available by livestream. I appreciated hearing the three priorities, but I was frankly appalled by your response to the questions about Kilmar Abrego Garcia. I am not quoting you verbatim, but in considering an action by the administration that is clearly illegal and unconstitutional, where they have set aside the rule of law and due process (as a recovering lawyer, I imagine this is something you would prioritize), where the government has acknowledged that there is no justification for having kidnapped him, what I heard from you was “Look, I don’t know what the guy did or didn’t do” which is parroting right-wing talking points and again, ignoring our obligation to the rule of law and process. And further you repeated twice that you weren’t going to “go in there with guns” which is not something that anyone was suggesting, so to say that you had no possible steps that you could take, and to put forward a strawperson example that was something you made up, not something you were asked, is disrespectful to your constituents. We are asking you to represent us, and we are concerned about the government’s specific actions in this situation. There are many reasonable (albeit impassioned) actions that you can take, and to dismiss concerns and suggest this person may have deserved this abuse is irresponsible and immoral. I want you to do much better.
Thank you for hearing my feedback.
