I have questions regarding Amendment 1, the Citizenship Requirement to Vote in West Virginia Elections Amendment, which will appear on the November 3, 2026, ballot. If Amendment 1 is approved, will currently registered U.S. citizens be required to re-register to vote, or will existing voter registrations remain valid? Additionally, what documentation, if any, will registered voters be required to provide to verify their citizenship? I am particularly interested in understanding how this could affect women whose current legal name differs from the name shown on their birth certificate—for example, women who have changed their last name through marriage, divorce, or another legal process. Would they be required to provide additional documentation connecting their current name to their birth certificate? If so, what specific documents would be accepted? Finally, if re-registration or additional documentation will be required, when would those requirements take effect, and where can voters find the official list of acceptable documents and procedures? I would appreciate clarification so voters can understand exactly what, if anything, they will need to do to remain properly registered and eligible to vote.
